Summer Reading Challenge
The 2026 Summer Reading Challenge is nearly ready to begin! All ages, children, teens and adults are invited to join in the challenge, win prizes, and enjoy all of the festivities of this year’s program. “Unearth a Story” is this year’s theme, and patrons can expect dinosaur-filled events all summer long.
 
Jumpstart this year's challenge by attending one of our two kickoff parties, starting on May 21st and a second on May 22nd.

Author Talks
We have a talented, local lineup of authors coming to our branches throughout the month, and we want to see you there.

 Hear presentations from Jack B. McGuire, Sarada Bonnett, and Judy Silverstein Gray as they each host an author talk event!
Jack B. McGuire
Come meet Jack B. McGuire on May 7th, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Causeway branch. He will discuss his newest book, Killing the Kingfish: The Huey Long Assassination

Sarada Bonnett, co-author of Notes of Forgiveness: A Daughter’s Journey and a Mother’s Gift, will hold a special meet and greet at the Covington Branch on May 12th from 6 to 7 p.m.

Judy Silverstein Gray will present at the Slidell branch on May 23rd from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
 
She will join us via Zoom to talk about her book, Unwavering: The Wives Who Fought to Ensure No Man is Left Behind, and answer questions.

Reminder that all St. Tammany Parish Library branches and offices will be closed Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day.
 
Branches and offices will re-open at their regular hours on Tuesday, May 26.

Mental Health & Wellness Fair
The St. Tammany Parish Commission on Families is hosting its 3rd annual Mental Health and Wellness Fair at the Madisonville branch on Tuesday, May 12th!
 
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., over 40 community organizations will be sharing Mental Health & Wellness resources for both youth and adults.

Friends of the Library News, Sales and Events

The Friends of the Library of West St. Tammany will hold their monthly Used Book Sale on May 15th and 16th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their building located at 1301 N. Florida St. in Covington, near the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds.

This will be the last sale at their current location. To reduce the number of books and other materials in storage while the Friends consider other location options, all items will be 50% off for this sale.

The Friends of the Slidell Library (FSL) will hold their monthly Used Book Sale on May 1st and May 2nd in the Slidell Library meeting room - celebrating their 50th Anniversary!
 
Members will receive a special treat on May 1st, and the public will receive anniversary bookmarks on May 2nd. 
  • May 1st - Member's Preview Sale, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 
  • May 2nd - Public Sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
The Member's Preview Sale is for FSL members only. But as always, memberships will be available to purchase or renew at the door. Annual memberships cost $5 per person or $8 per family. 
 
The Friends of the Slidell Library (FSL) will hold their SSSSale (Second Saturday Special Sale) on May 9th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Slidell Library, located at 555 Robert Blvd. This month's sale theme is World War II.
 
The Friends’ used book sales, silent auctions, and other special sale events help raise funds to purchase items and fund events for the Slidell, Lacombe, Pearl River, and South Slidell Branch Libraries. For more information about FSL, activities, and membership, send an email to fsl70458@yahoo.com.
