TeenTober 2025
This month will be the Library’s 7th annual “TeenTober,” a celebration of the teen community and the joy of reading. All library branches will host special events and programs to highlight the free resources and activities available to teens year-round.
 
TeenTober is also Teen Amnesty Month, which waives overdue fines and card replacement fees for teen library cardholders ages 13 to 17.

Empowered Communities
The Reference Department has teamed up with local social service organizations to provide workshops to the community. Each month, a local social service organization will provide educational information to patrons.
 
The first organization, Hope House, Children's Advocacy Center, will host two workshops on Internet Safety for Parents this month. One will be held at the Covington branch on Oct. 11th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the second will be at the South Slidell branch on Oct. 25th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
 
Training provided by Hope House will discuss the features of different mobile apps and what parents need to know to protect their young children and teens online.
 
The discussion will be led by Brian Brown, Detective and Forensic Examiner with the Covington Police Department, Special Victim Unit Investigator with the 22nd JDC District Attorney's Office. Brown has been certified as an expert in numerous jurisdictions in cyber investigations and forensic examinations.

Full System Closure
Library Closed on October 13th
All St. Tammany Parish Library offices and branches will be closed on
October 13, 2025, for All Staff Training.
 
Branches and offices will resume normal business hours on October 14, 2025.

Friends' Fall Concerts
Friends' Fall Concerts
The Friends of the Slidell Library’s Fall Concert Series continues this month with three concerts lined up in October. All concerts are from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Outdoor concerts do not require registration; however, indoor concerts do require registration to provide enough seating for attendees.

Master Gardener Lecture Series
Master Gardener Lecture Series
The Adult Programming Department has teamed up with several St. Tammany Master Gardeners to provide plenty of gardening classes and events across the parish through the end of October.
 
This series is titled the Master Gardener Lecture Series and will include discussions about native plants, toxic plants, bats, pollinator gardens, square foot gardening, vegetable gardens, and citrus trees.

Louisiana Folk Series
Dr. Bruce Craft of Southeastern Louisiana University continues his Louisiana Folk Life series with a spotlight on the New Llano Cooperative Colonists on October 7th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Causeway branch.

Kids Club
KIDS Club: Crafting Events
KIDS Club offers kids ages 6 to 12 opportunities to learn crafts, create wondrous artwork, and delve into science. These programs provide a fun way to incorporate creativity and learning into afternoon events.
 
Some of the programs happening this month include:
  • Weaving with Looms
  • Clay Monsters and Animals
  • Spirographs
  • Snap Circuits
  • Fall Perler Beads
  • and more!

Program Highlight:
Jari C. Honora’s Presentation of Pope Leo XIV’s Creole roots
The Reference Department often has notable guest speakers to present at events. In August, Jari C. Honora, the family historian at the Williams Research Center at the New Orleans Historical Collection, presented his findings when researching America’s first pope, Leo XIV.
 
A recording was made and is now available for all patrons who were unable to attend the event live.

Friends of the Library News, Sales and Events

The Friends of the Library of West St. Tammany will hold their monthly Used Book Sale on October 17th and 18th,  from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their building located at 1301 N. Florida St. in Covington, near the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds.

Some items start as low as 25 cents. Find books, DVDs, music and audio CDs, and puzzles, with a large selection of homeschool items and children's books. All proceeds support St. Tammany Parish Libraries.

The Friends of the Slidell Library (FSL) held their SSSSale (Second Saturday Special Sale) on October 11th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Slidell Library, located at 555 Robert Blvd. This month's theme will focus on newer and current fiction books for adults.
 
The Friends of the Slidell Library (FSL) will have their Used Book Sale on October 17th and 18th in the Slidell Library meeting room.
  • October 17th - Member's Preview Sale, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 
  • October 18th - Public Sale, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
The Member's Preview Sale is for FSL members only. But as always, memberships will be avilable to purchase or renew at the door. Annual memberships cost $5 per person or $8 per family. 
 
The Friends’ used book sales, silent auctions, and other special sale events help raise funds to purchase items and fund events for the Slidell, Lacombe, Pearl River, and South Slidell Branch Libraries. For more information about FSL, activities, and membership, send an email to fsl70458@yahoo.com.
