June 2nd officially marked 75 years of the St. Tammany Parish Library!
 
For the past 75 years, the Library has been a beacon of creativity, community, and connection for the people of St. Tammany Parish. Nothing would be possible without 75 years' worth of amazing patrons and staff to help the Library grow and flourish into what it is today. Summer Reading
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing after our two highly attended kickoff parties last month. Between the two parties, over 2,100 patrons attended! One party was held at the Slidell branch on May 22nd and the Madisonville branch party was on May 23rd.
 
If you missed the parties, you can still get into the Summer Reading Challenge. Visit your local branch to get started or register online.

Teen Writing Workshops
TEENS: Creative Writing
Local author Joy Rancatore will be coming to the Library this month to teach Teen Creative Writing Workshops! Learn the basics of and how to enhance your creative writing at the six differently themed workshops.
 
Patrons can sign up for one or all of the workshops! These workshops are for teens ages 13 to 17 and registration is required.

Folk Art Lecture
Folk Art Lecture
Join us at the Covington Branch on Wednesday, June 11th, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. as Dr. Bruce Craft of Southeastern Louisiana University explores Southern Folk Art from both the artistic and cultural perspective!
 
He will review the life and works of Clementine Hunter, Woodie Long, Mose Tolliver, and others, teaching us about Southern culture and folk life.

Art Show
NAMI Art Show
The St. Tammany Parish Library continues to be a platform for creativity, innovation, and community interaction, with a new community art show this summer!
 
Starting June 14th through July 12th, artwork from participants in NAMI programs will be on display at the Slidell branch for community viewing.

Monday Movies
Movie Monday: Secret Origin
On June 16th, enjoy a showing of "Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics" at the South Slidell branch from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
 
This original documentary is the first of its kind, with a compelling look at the company that created the modern superhero, produced with unprecedented access to the archives of Warner Bros. and DC Comics. It explores 75 years of DC Comics, the memorable characters of its universe, and the talented artists and writers who brought them to life.
 
The "Movie Monday" series showcases movies that celebrate the world of art for this year's Summer Reading theme, "Color Our World." 
 
From true stories of legendary artists to visually stunning animations and films about the creative process, these films are sure to inspire your inner artist!

Juneteenth
Juneteenth Closure
All St. Tammany Parish Library branches and offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19th, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
 
Regular business hours will resume on Friday, June 20th.

Friends of the Library News, Sales and Events

The Friends of the Library of West St. Tammany will hold their monthly Used Book Sale on June 20th and June 21st,  from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their building located at 1301 N. Florida St. in Covington, near the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds.

Some items start as low as 25 cents. Find books, DVDs, music and audio CDs, and puzzles, with a large selection of homeschool items and children's books. All proceeds support St. Tammany Parish Libraries.

The Friends of the Slidell Library (FSL) will hold their SSSSale (Second Saturday Special Sale) on June 14th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Slidell Library, located at 555 Robert Blvd. This month's theme will be Children's and Teens' books.

The Friends’ used book sales, silent auctions, and other special sale events help raise funds to purchase items and fund events for the Slidell, Lacombe, Pearl River, and South Slidell Branch Libraries. For more information about FSL, activities, and membership, send an email to fsl70458@yahoo.com.
