TeenTober
Throughout October, the St. Tammany Parish Library will host its 6th annual “TeenTober,” spotlighting the teen community and encouraging them to find a passion for reading. Special events and programs will be held at the library branches promoting the free resources and activities available to teens all year round.  
 
This year the STPL Teen Department will present teens with socially connected, STREAM (Science/Technology/Reading/Engineering/Art/Math) themed events:

In addition, the Library celebrates TeenTober with "Teen Amnesty Month," where any teen ages 12 to 17 who has lost their library card may have it replaced for no additional cost, and/or return overdue books checked out on their card and have the overdue fines waived.

Full System Closure - October 21
All St. Tammany Parish Library branches will be closed on
October 21, 2024, for All Staff Training Day. All branches and offices will reopen at normal business hours on October 22, 2024.

The Causeway Branch will be temporarily closed from 10/11/2024 through 10/19/2024 for renovations.
 
The Causeway Branch will reopen on 10/22/2024.

Check Out Louisiana
Starting October 1st, the St. Tammany Parish Library is partnering with the State Library of Louisiana to participate in the "Check Out Louisiana" state parks program. 

Four branches will launch the pilot program:
 
At these branches, a limited number of passes and Geaux Explore backpacks will be available at the circulation desks to check out with a library card each week.

One pass allows free entry to any state park or historic site for one carload of people.
 
NO HOLDS can be placed for the passes and backpacks, they are FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.

Fall Concert Series
The Jump Hounds (10/2), Samuel Wheelock (10/15) and Callie Hines (10/22)
The Friends of the Slidell Library’s concerts continue into this month with one outdoor concert and two indoor concerts.
 
Concert Lineup: 

  • The Jump Hounds, a jazz-based rhythm and blues band, will perform on Wednesday, October 2nd in the side yard of the Lacombe Branch, 28027 Hwy. 190, Lacombe (with a rain date of October 9th).

  • Samuel Wheelock will play modern electric folk music on Tuesday, October 15th in the meeting room of the South Slidell Branch, 3901 Pontchartrain Drive.

  • Callie Hines, an Americana/folk artist, will play on Tuesday, October 22nd in the meeting room of the Slidell Branch, 555 Robert Blvd.
 
The events are free and open to the public. Bring your own seating and food to the outdoor concerts. The rain date will be used if inclement weather prohibits the band from performing outdoors. Seating will be provided for the indoor concerts. Light refreshments are provided for all concerts.

Napoleon: A life in four movements
Frank M. McGlothlin, a library associate with a Master's in History and Warfare from the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom), will present the life, conquests and legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte in four separate events this month. Events are for adult attendees and will be held each Tuesday in October at the Causeway branch (except for 10/15). All sessions are from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Registration is required.

Genealogy Spotlight: French Immigration to Louisiana
Marguerite Scully, a professional genealogical researcher and lecturer, will have a presentation on French Immigration to Louisiana at the Madisonville branch on October 5th from 10 a.m. to 11:30 am.
 
This program will include a description of the major waves of French immigration to Louisiana from the early 1700s to the early 1870s, and how the history of Louisiana, France, and its colonies influenced those migration waves. The discussion of French immigration will not only include those French citizens who immigrated directly from France, but also those who came from other French colonies in North America just as the French Canadians, Acadians, and French West Indies Islanders.
 
Attendees can view the presentation in person or from home via a ZOOM link. Registration is required.

Friends of the Library News, Sales and Events

The Friends of the Library of West St. Tammany will hold their monthly Used Book Sale on October 18th and 19th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at their building located at 1301 N. Florida St. in Covington, near the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds.

Some items start as low as 25 cents. Find books, DVDs, music and audio CDs, and puzzles, with a large selection of homeschool items and children's books. All proceeds support St. Tammany Parish Libraries. 

Each month the Friends hold a silent auction at the Covington Library with an array of interesting titles. Check the Covington Library for the auction list and starting bids.

The Friends of the Slidell Library (FSL) will hold an SSSSale on Saturday, October 12th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside the Slidell Branch, 555 Robert Blvd.
 
Second Saturday Special Sales are monthly themed sales featuring specially selected books in excellent condition. This sale will include over a hundred newer and current fiction books for adults published within the last two years. Books will be priced as follows:  hardbacks $3, soft covers $2, and paperbacks $1.  Many titles by favorite authors will be included.  
 
The Friends of the Slidell Library will hold a used book sale in the Slidell Library meeting room, 555 Robert Blvd., on Friday, October 18th, and Saturday, October 19th. On Friday, the members’ only preview sale will take place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Only members may select and purchase books on Friday. Memberships are available for sale or renewal at the door. Annual memberships cost $5.00 for individuals and $8.00 for families. New and renewing members receive one annual membership premium $5 gift certificate to be used during any FSL sale event in 2024. 
 
The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Book prices will range from .50 cents for mass-market paperbacks and children’s books to $1 for trade paperbacks and hard-cover books.
 
This sale will feature subject/genre-oriented book Mystery Bags priced at $1 per bag. There will be bags for adult readers, teen readers, and younger readers. Magazines, foreign language books, and large print titles will also be available. Additionally, this sale will include specially priced sets of books for all ages. As usual, during FSL Used Book Sales, there will be several thousand books for all ages and interests, both fiction and non-fiction.
 
Payment is accepted in the form of cash or personal checks only.
 
The Friends of the Slidell Library, an all-volunteer non-profit organization founded in 1976, raises funds using used book sales and silent auctions to help support the Slidell, Pearl River, South Slidell, and Lacombe libraries.
